Michelle Haglund

My art is an expression of a deep appreciation and connection to nature. My garden, birds and other little creatures that visit often, inspire me endlessly. Every day, every season, while I toil in the yard something will capture me, and I want to draw it, paint it.

I use a mixed media technique starting with simple drawing and water color, building up layers of color on an absorbent surface. When dry, I then apply molten wax in the process of encaustic painting, which allows me to continue building and altering the surface, while protecting the layers underneath.

Color is a mysterious element that I like to play with. When I’m drawn to a vibrant color in the natural world, I think how garish it would look in a realistic painting. Part of my process is to layer intense color in a foundation of milder tones, creating an abstract background, where the focal images appear to float in an ethereal setting. My paintings are about reverence, bringing the simplicity and soul connection of nature into the domain of busy, modern life.
